While a historic building that is leaking is watertight, a new temporary library is opening.
The library roof in Kettering suffered damage from water during the bad weather that hit earlier this year.
The roof was leaking and despite the plans to repair it, the heavy rains made things worse.
While a repair project of PS7m is underway, the library will be moved into a new Cornerstone Extension building.
North Northamptonshire Council’s Cornerstone flagship project has been delayed due to problems with the library in 1904. The building was built as a library, art gallery and community centre.
It was only after the October rains that the Council decided to shut down the Library. The roof on the old building had deteriorated and allowed water into the new.
The library is temporarily moving to the Cornerstone Extension’s upper level in December.
The council stated that the upper floor was unaffected by the water leaking from the roof of the library.
Helen Howell is the executive member of the council for leisure and cultural affairs. She said, “I’m pleased we can now open a library in the modern, new extension to Cornerstone.
We are doing everything we can to find a solution.
Council said that the library will return to its original location as soon as it is water-tight. The upper level of the Cornerstone Extension would then resume its role as a public space with catering and bookable rooms.
The temporary library has not yet set a date for its opening.
