Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and their TGL tech competition will not launch until 2025 due to damage in the Florida arena. The repairs would take too much time and cause scheduling issues for TV and the players.
It was planned that the six-team League would debut on ESPN on January 9 and end the season in April, just before the Masters. The six teams were announced, and the players began to fill out their rosters. The league was suddenly without a place to play due to a power outage last week.
A temporary power system failure and backup systems that were used to build the SoFi Center at Palm Beach Gardens on November 14 caused the dome’s deflation, which led to damage of the dome-supported section of the venue.
The technology was not damaged and no one was hurt.
Woods stated that “although the events last week may force us to adjust our schedule, I am fully confident that our committed players will bring this concept to life.”
TMRW Sports is a concept co-founded with Woods by McIlroy. It involves team matches in a 250,000 square foot arena located at Palm Beach State College. Longer shots are directed at a 20-times larger screen than the standard simulator. Actual shots of 50 yards and closer are directed to a green complex with a rotating turntable that creates different shots.
Depending on the shot, full shots can be played either off of real grass or sand.
In order to get the right results, and not rush to fix the problems in time to launch the league the following year with a likely partial schedule of games, the key partners – from TMRW Sports and ESPN to commercial sponsors and the six owners groups to 23 players – decided to delay the debut for one year.
Woods owns and plays for Jupiter Links. McIlroy plays on Boston Commons alongside Adam Scott, Keerrell Bradley, and Tyrrell Hatton. New York, San Francisco Los Angeles, and Atlanta are also home to teams owned by high-powered groups.
McIlroy stated that the postponement brought mixed emotions of excitement and disappointment. We are most happy to hear that nobody was hurt. While the delays are disappointing, they will give us time to regroup and refocus.
Woods, McIlroy, and Mike McCarley (former executive of NBC Golf Channel) founded TMRW Sports Entertainment and Media Group.
In August 2022, they announced the formation of TGL. This three-month league would cater to a different audience while still being traditional.
The tournament attracted a lineup of All-Star players, including Woods, McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa Patrick Cantlay Xander Schauffele, Max Homa and Patrick Cantlay.
Jon Rahm was originally part of the 24 man roster, but he decided to withdraw from the team after the first season due to concerns about travel costs to Florida to play the matches once a week. Teams don’t compete every week, and three out of four players will be active for each game.
It is expected that the 15-hole match will take about two hours. This time frame fits into ESPN’s schedule, which features a lot of college basketball in primetime.
TGL has not provided a timetable for repairs, nor indicated if they will rebuild or upgrade the structure. The stadium can hold 1,600 people, while the track is about the same size as a football pitch.
Andrew Cohen, the co-founder and investor in the New York Team, said, “We are aware of the unavoidable and unfortunate delay to the 2025 season, but this gives the league, teams and the players more time to deliver an outstanding experience.”
