Yesterday afternoon, after a hot day in San Luis a thunderstorm erupted in the province’s north. Damaged vehicles, broken glass of houses and businesses, roofs that were blown off, and trees fell.
Hailstones the size of a five-aside soccer ball were causing destruction in the city of Lujan located 120 km north of San Luis. In several social media videos, they were visible.

The roof of Berenice’s and Jorge’s house collapsed on Wednesday 15th November. A week after, the couple still cannot afford to rebuild the structure or demolish the remaining debris.

Jorge was going to go out and see what the noise was, but Berenice suggested that he leave them alone. Before they had time to say anything, they heard a wall fall. “The house rumbled. Everything rumbled,” Jorge remembered. The glass in the kitchen broke. Fortunately, there were two mattresses leaning up against the wall, which cushioned the impact.
They thought they would have to move out of that house. If they could, then they needed to find a new place to live.
The Firefighters and Civil Protection team arrived on the same day and checked the home and removed the remaining fence. However, they were unable to remove the entire fence as they had to enter another residence and there was no one in it.
The house is fine. However, because of the financial constraints, Jorge, along with one of his neighbours, began removing debris. They charged 800 pesos to just remove it, without taking out the earth pieces that were still in the house.
Berenice’s husband and Berenice both missed work on that particular day. “I had to move due to a lack of resources. I also had to clean, because there were people coming to live here in one corner,” said the man, though they attempted to justify their absence. Their respective managers couldn’t help them that day and, to make things worse, they deducted money from their wages the following week.
Berenice explained that this is due to the fact that the house was built of adobe and has been around for many years.
It is difficult to afford to renovate the room because the family has 3 children, ages 13, 10, and 5. “I say that either we fix it or we eat”, the woman said.
