Kathleen and Michael Lynch are described by local GAA as being a ‘family that is deeply rooted in the club and community’
Locally, Kathleen (80), and Michael Lynch (53) have been identified as the mother and son that died early Sunday morning in an blaze in Co Cavan.
The local GAA club described them as “a family steeped in club and community”. It is believed that they died in the fire, which was reported to emergency services just before 2am Sunday.

The fire services arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames. Both Ms Lynch’s and her son’s deaths were confirmed on the spot. The bodies of Ms Lynch and her son were transported to Cavan General Hospital mortuary where postmortems would be performed.
Castlerahan GAA Club described Sunday’s news in a tribute as “awful”.
Kathleen has four grandchildren who were on last year’s winning inter team and also a granddaughter in the women’s team which won the intermediate championship. “Her grandson Jamie O’Reilly plays for our U17 team, which is in the final of the championship,” said it on social media.
It continued by saying that a moment of silence will be observed on Sunday at all county games.
The local Fine Gael Councillor Trevor Smith called the deaths a “terrible tragedies” and expressed that “the thoughts and prayers of our entire community are with their family and loved ones at this time of difficulty”.
