Homeless asylum seekers who have built sheds by the Thames to be near water, say they do not plan to leave their improvised huts.
Shahoo Amini is originally from Iran and lives under Battersea Bridge, near Cheyne Walk, in Chelsea. He says that locals have given him plenty to eat and drink.
In an interview with MailOnline, Amini stated: “People were very kind. Staying here. I was brought food and coffee. They have brought me food and coffee.
It isn’t visible on the bridge, but the locals are happy with the new neighbor because he’s polite, tidy and cleans after himself.
He says that he’s not received any contact from the Kensington and Chelsea Council or Transport for London who are in charge of maintaining the bridge.
He told a publication that he was not bothered by anyone and, to be truthful, his shed is hidden from view.
‘I love my little place. The fresh air is wonderful when you open the windows and look out over the Thames. It’s better to be here rather than on the street.
This Iranian man in his forties says that he lived previously in Victoria, but was forced to leave in March 2023 after an accident on a motorcycle caused him most of his memory and lost his courier job.
The Mail reported that he said: “I was unable to work, but I honestly can’t recall too much.” I suffered a great deal of mental and physical damage from the accident, particularly to my memory. After I was evicted, I lived on the street as a homeless person but can’t recall where.
It’s gone. Since the accident, my head has changed and I can’t recall much of what happened in my past.
Amini, who was homeless at the time, built his shed with materials that he purchased from a building yard for around PS300. He relies on his hot water bottles to keep warm as there is no heating in the house.
The shed’s roof is covered in plastic and the board he uses to sleep on rises above the floor of his 8ft by 4ft home. It also serves as a desk and storage space for all his possessions.
Two makeshift openings in the shack provide a stunning view of The Thames.
Mr Amini uses the restrooms and showers in a gym nearby once a month.
Locals have reportedly seen him cook complex meals on his portable stove when the weather is good.
There have not been any complaints about the behaviour of Mr Amini, nor are there immediate plans to remove him from his temporary home.
The Mail reported that authorities will support the man.
TfL’s spokesperson said that no one should sleep on the streets of London. TfL has teamed up with Kensington and Chelsea Council’s housing and rough sleep outreach service to assist the individual who is sleeping in the shed under the Battersea Bridge.
“Rough Sleepers Need Specialist Support from Dedicated Outreach Services, To Help Them Find a Permanent Route Off the Streets.” We will continue working with outreach services in order to protect those who are sleeping on the streets or looking for refuge within our network.
To help rough sleepers find permanent solutions to their problems, they need the support of dedicated outreach services. ‘We continue to work closely with outreach services in order to protect those who are sleeping on the streets or looking for refuge within our network.
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council added that it could not comment on specific cases. We support rough sleepers to access benefits, housing, and other services that are tailored to their needs to provide them with an alternative way to live on the street.
Our outreach team works night shifts several times per week in order to help rough sleepers as soon as possible. This is a complicated issue, and we can only provide support if people want to.
