In an interim report about the storm, new details have been revealed on the destruction caused by Storm Ciaran.

Three people were hurt, homes were destroyed and businesses were wrecked as the tornado ripped an 8km path of destruction through the eastern part of the island at midnight between the 1st and 2nd November.

It was previously graded as T6 by the UK’s Tornado and Storm Research Organisation, which made it the most powerful tornado to strike the British Isles in almost 70 years.

After visiting the Island on the weekend following the storm, the organisation published a report detailing the damages at each location along the track of the tornado.

The tornado was about 550 meters wide and formed in the ocean off the South Coast. It was still weak at its edge, but it did enter the Island.

It then narrowed down to 200 meters as it tracked through St Clement, dumping sand it had collected on the beaches in some places. Then it exited at Fliquet and died over the ocean.

The intensity of the storm varied greatly, and was at its highest in Boulivot where extensive home damage occurred.

Reports document the extensive damage in Fliquet where three cottages’ roofs were ripped off. A section of flat roofing was discovered 100 meters away, to the north. Patio doors were found 60 metres from the house and dented a car.

Sarah Horton was the TORRO investigator on site who flew out to Jersey to evaluate the destruction. She said, ‘When I look at damage done to homes and listen to reports about debris flying above people as they slept, it is amazing that no one else has been injured.

It was a tornado, so it’s not surprising that the intensity varied along its path. The damage was not uniform. There were some areas that were severely damaged and others where it wasn’t. But it still was a life-changing experience for those whose homes it struck.

I think the damage was most severe at Boulivot.

She continued: “In many respects, the island was unfortunate. If it formed a little further away, it would probably have crossed the ocean and we would not have known that it formed.

Fliquet had a really bad luck – they would not have been affected if the accident happened a few hundred meters in another direction.

TORRO is due to publish its final report on the tornado in January. The organisation encourages people to share their own personal stories about how it affected them.
